2017-2018: Formation[edit | edit source]

On May 5, 2017, Hello Pro Kenshuusei held their annual test event where UP-FRONT PROMOTION representative director Nishiguchi Takeshi suddenly decided that several members including Ichioka Reina, Takase Kurumi, and Kiyono Momohime would debut from the trainee program, with the latter two forming a "new section" that was focused on theater but different from Engeki Joshibu.[3][4] On June 26, 2017, through a special episode of Hello! Project Station, it was revealed that Ichioka would debut as the leader of a new group and that additional members would be found in the future.[5][6][7]

On March 30, 2018, an update was posted to the official Hello! Project website, announcing that the group featuring Ichioka would be a "performance group" that aims to elevate singing and dancing through physical expression; while the new section including Takase and Kiyono would become a second new group with the image of a "small theater troupe" that uses expressive power and theatrical elements in their singing and dancing, and both groups would begin activities sometime in the summer or fall.[8] On the same day, it was announced that an audition to find members for the new groups was slated to begin in late April.[9] Following a postponement, the Hello! Project "ONLY YOU" Audition finally began on May 11.[10]

On June 9, 2018, during the Hello! Project Kenshuusei Happyoukai 2018 6gatsu ~Niji~ at Zepp Tokyo, it was announced that Shimakura Rika, Nishida Shiori, and Eguchi Saya would join Ichioka's group and Maeda Kokoro, Yamazaki Yuhane, and Okamura Minami would join Takase and Kiyono's group, with the possibility of more members being added to both groups following the conclusion of the ongoing audition.[11] Two days later, it was announced that both groups would make their stage debut in the Hello! Project 20th Anniversary!! Hello! Project 2018 SUMMER concert tour on July 14.[12]

On July 14, 2018, all of the members' profiles were removed from the Hello Pro Kenshuusei page on the official Hello! Project site, indicating they were no longer trainees.

On October 19, 2018, the groups' names were revealed as CHICA#TETSU and Ame no Mori Kawa Umi. Together they would form a collective group named BEYOOOOONDS, and instead of the Hello! Project "ONLY YOU" Audition winners joining either of the two groups, they would become part of BEYOOOOONDS. Takase Kurumi was also announced as leader of Ame no Mori Kawa Umi.[1][2]

On December 3, 2018, during the BEYOOOOONDS Ouen Kikaku FC Event 2018 ~Fuyu no Jin ZIN~ at Yamano Hall, the winners of the Hello! Project "ONLY YOU" Audition were revealed as Satoyoshi Utano, Kobayashi Honoka, and Hirai Miyo[13] and the members' image colors were announced.[14] BEYOOOOONDS would begin activities as 12 members in the Hello! Project 20th Anniversary!! Hello! Project 2019 WINTER concert tour.[15]

On April 30, the group held the BEYOOOOONDS Ouen Kikaku FC Event 2019 ~Banshun no Jin ZIN~ where it was revealed that they would make their major debut and release their first single on August 7, with "Megane no Otoko no Ko" as one of the three A-sides.[18][19][20] The full title of their debut single was later revealed as "Megane no Otoko no Ko / Nippon no D・N・A! / Go Waist".[21]

On August 2, BEYOOOOONDS performed at TOKYO IDOL FESTIVAL 2019 on the SMILE GARDEN stage alongside PINK CRES. and other idols for a Hello! Project Special Stage titled Berryz Koubou Daisuki Special! ~Natsuyaki Miyabi (PINK CRES.) & BEYOOOOONDS & TIF Senbatsu Special Collab~.[22][23][24]

On September 28, the group performed at LIVEPRO FESTIVAL 2019,[25] and on September 29, they will perform in the BomberE Wolfy Matsuri Special LIVE DAY2 of the Metele Wolfy Matsuri 2019.[26][27]

Alongside the three other artists who won the award, they were nominees for the Best New Artist of the Year Award, for which the winner was be announced at the ceremony.[31] At the ceremony on December 30, they were presented their award and were later announced as the winners of the Best New Artist of the Year Award out of three other artists.[32]

On November 27, the group released their first album, titled BEYOOOOOND1St.

On March 28, it was announced that BEYOOOOONDS would host a regular corner on the multi-network music info program Uta-navi!. The exact air date and title of the corner would be announced later, and the members would take turns as hosts..[33]

On April 1, BEYOOOOONDS began airing their first regular radio show, BEYOOOOONDS no O no Kazu wa Itsutsu Desu.[34]

On April 4, BEYOOOOONDS began airing a new regular radio show, BEYOOOOONDS no Byo~~~~~tto Tobikoe Night!.[35]

On April 9, it was announced that BEYOOOOONDS would star in a new variety show titled KURAGAE ~Watashitachi no Koto, Oshite Kudasai!~ (KURAGAE –私たちのこと、推してください!-) that aired its two episodes on April 15 and April 22 on TV Tokyo.[36][37]

On April 15, it was announced that BEYOOOOONDS would be participating in the KAGOME GO! ME Project by releasing a collaboration song titled "Vitamin ME" promoting the KAGOME ONEDAY vegetable drink. A music video was uploaded to YouTube on the same day, and the collaboration was promoted on their show KURAGAE ~Watashitachi no Koto, Oshite Kudasai!~.[38][39]

From April 20 to May 31, the BEYOOOOONDS members had a short video series titled "Ouchi demo Beyonds Gakkou" (お家でもびよんず学校; Beyonds School at Home) on their YouTube channel, where a different member would teach a class on a different subject every morning and afternoon to encourage fans to stay home during the coronavirus pandemic.[40] The series was later released on DVD.

On August 7, BEYOOOOONDS released their first official book, BEYOOOOONDS①.[41]

On October 2, BEYOOOOONDS performed at TOKYO IDOL FESTIVAL Online 2020. Unlike previous years, this concert was livestreamed without an audience due to the coronavirus pandemic.[42]

2021[edit | edit source]

On January 24, it was announced through the official BEYOOOOONDS YouTube channel that the three winners of the Hello! Project "ONLY YOU" Audition have received their unit name SeasoningS. Hirai Miyo was also appointed as the leader of SeasoningS.[43]

On March 3, the group will release their second single, Gekikara LOVE / Now Now Ningen / Konna Hazu ja Nakatta!.[44][45]

Group Name Origins[edit | edit source]

The name was chosen with hopes of the group growing freely towards the future, beyond their existing framework, with the group aiming for an ever-changing appearance similar to slime.[1]

Chica is Spanish for "girl" and tetsu (哲) means "philosophy". The two words were brought together to create a group name that means "girls who think deeply of things".[1]

Ame no Mori Kawa Umi Logo

Ame no Mori Kawa Umi

The name represents sources of life such as nature, and each of the founding group members has a part of their name with a meaning related to nature: kurumi (くるみ) meaning "walnut" from Takase Kurumi, ta (田) meaning "rice field" from Maeda Kokoro, hane (羽) meaning "feather" from Yamazaki Yuhane, oka (岡) meaning "hill" and nami (波) meaning "wave" from Okamura Minami, and momo (桃) meaning "peach" from Kiyono Momohime.[1]

The name comes from "Season" as in the four seasons of the year, but also comes from "Seasoning" as in when one adds spices to their dish for flavor. These two meanings represent how the three members add a delicious flavor to their performance and add vivid colors to the group as a whole due to the skills that the members are good at.
